Historical Reference
The Department was founded in 1969. The staff of the Department organized and equipped classrooms, a Biomechanical Research Laboratory, a Museum of Educational Wet Macrodrugs and a micro-collection of the Department. At that time the Department conducted a research on the effects of vibration on the state of the musculoskeletal system, prevention of road injuries and the development of structures for osteosynthesis in bone fractures.
From 1990 to 2011 the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics the scientific activity of the department was aimed at studying dystrophic-degenerative and traumatic injuries of large joints and their endoprosthetics, the Department substantiated and created new technologies of extra-articular reconstruction of the ligamentous apparatus of the knee joint.
Since 2011, Professor Maksym Holovakha (golovakha.dp.ua) was appointed the Head of the Department.
A new stage of introduction of modern directions of medical-diagnostic and scientific work has begun at the Department.
The Department is a clinical and scientific base for training medical and pediatric doctors. Internships, clinical residencies, Master's degree course and postgraduate studies are open at the Department for teaching of Traumatology and Orthopedics. Graduates of the Department work as orthopedists-traumatologists and doctors in the USA, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Germany, India, Yemen.
Educational Disciplines
Traumatology and Orthopedics (internship, clinical residency, thematic improvement courses for doctors) — studied by domestic and foreign students (fifth and sixth years) of the Medical Faculties, majoring in "General Medicine" and "Pediatrics".
Educational and Methodical Work
The training of students at the Department is based on the principles of providing methodological and informational organization of the educational process with elements of independent work, practical work at the patients' bedside, work in operating rooms with the possibility of participation in surgical interventions, as well as the introduction of new effective forms of knowledge control.
Original lectures for domestic and foreign students are given exclusively with the use of multimedia technologies.
The Student Scientific Circle of the Department is actively working. Every month thematic meetings of the Circle are held on the basis of the Department, where students report the results of theoretical and practical work, representatives of the Department cover current issues of modern traumatology and orthopedics. Every year the members of the Circle speak at domestic and foreign conferences of young scientists, many of them became winners in different categories. Scientific Directions and Achievements
2 doctoral and 11 candidate dissertations were defended at the Department.
Lecturers of the Department published 2 monographs, received 26 copyright certificates and patents, published more than 500 articles and abstracts.
The international Ukrainian-Austrian symposium "Topical Issues of Orthopedics and Sports Injuries" is held annually with the participation of the Department, in the work of which specialists from Ukraine and abroad take part.
Cooperation with Other Institutions
The Department maintains close scientific relations with research institutes of Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, as well as with scientists from Austria, Germany and Poland.
The Department of Sport Traumatology of Wiener PrivatKlinik, Vienna, Austria (Head — Professor R. Schabus), is the partner of the Unit of Orthopedics, Arthrology and Sports Trauma of the Zaporizhia Regional Clinical Hospital (ZRCH).
Employees of the Department are active members of Ukrainian and international unions and associations of orthopedists-traumatologists (AO, ESSKA, EFORT, EWAS, UASTKA, etc.).
