Department of Oncology and Surgical Oncology

Head of the Department:
Oleksii KOLESNIK, Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences, oncology surgeon of the highest qualification category, thoracic surgeon of the highest qualification category, oncologist of the highest qualification category.


Historical Reference

The teaching of Oncology as an independent discipline at the institute began in 1974, when an Oncology Course was organized at the Department of Hospital Surgery.

In 1976, the Oncology Course was separated into an independent structural unit.

The Department of Oncology with Nneurosurgery Course was established in December 1993 on the basis of the Regional Oncology Dispensary (the Neurosurgery Course was located on the basis of the Neurosurgical Unit of the Regional Hospital).

In 2005, in accordance with the requirements of the Bologna Declaration, the Department of Oncology was transformed into an Oncology Course, and in 2008 the status of the Department was restored. In 2014, the Department was renamed in the Department of Oncology and Oncosurgery.

Currently, the Department is headed by Oleksii Kolesnyk.

Educational Disciplines

Fifth- sixth-year students of the Medical Faculties Nos. 1 and 2, majoring in "General Medicine" and "Pediatrics", fourth-year students of the Medical Faculty No. 3, fourth-year students, majoring in "Laboratory Diagnostics", interns and clinical residents study Oncology at the Department.

In 2018, thanks to the support of the Administration and the Dean's Office of the FPO, the Department received a "Permit Letter from the Ministry of Health of Ukraine No. 08.ла-32/7386 dated 23/03/2018" to conduct thematic improvement courses at the department on the following topics: Palliative Care for Cancer Patients, Modern Drug Therapy of Malignant Tumors, Oncology and Oncosurgery. The first thematic improvement course was conducted in December 2018.

Also held::

  • Lectures and practical classes on Oncology for foreign students in Ukrainian, English and Russian.
  • Training on Clinical Oncology in Master's degree course, internship training and clinical residency.
  • Postgraduate studies on Modern Oncology.
  • Oncology classes for interns in related specialties — family doctors, otolaryngologists, gynecologists, surgeons and pediatric surgeons.


Educational and Methodical Work

The training of students at the Department is based on the principles of providing methodological and informational organization of the educational process with elements of independent work, as well as on the introduction of new effective forms of knowledge and skills control. A bank of test tasks has been created for the KROK-2 licensing exams, which includes more than 600 tests. The Department is equipped with a mobile computer class.

According to the curriculum, the Bologna Declaration created work programs in the discipline.

All lectures for domestic and foreign students are given using multimedia technologies and equipment for interactive lectures.

Since 1978, the Department has introduced educational television with the ability to monitor and record operations in the operating room of the oncology center.

In 2017, for the first time in Ukraine for educational purposes, as part of measures related to the implementation of distance education, the Department launched broadcasts of operations on Instagram and other media, which was praised by Acting Minister of Health.

Since March 2020, the Department has successfully implemented the remote educational process.

The Department fully prepared documents for the University website for distance education.

Organizational and Moral Building Work

The main task of the staff of the Department in this area is to raise the level of national-patriotic, moral-ethical and aesthetic education of future professionals.

Lecturers of the Department conduct educational work in the following areas:

  • Teaching high moral qualities of the Ukrainian doctor to students;
  • Promoting the active participation of students, interns and cadets in the socio-political and artistic life of the city, involving them in conducting independent cultural and educational activities;
  • Career guidance work.


Scientific Directions and Achievements

The research topic of the Department is "Use of Clinical and Morphological Criteria for Selection of Adjuvant Chemotherapy in Patients with Malignant Neoplasms".

Since 2003, the staff of the Department has defended 2 doctoral and 7 candidate dissertations.


Cooperation with Other Institutions

The Department maintains close scientific ties with the National Cancer Institute, Kavetskyi Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology and Radiobiology of the NAS of Ukraine, departments of oncology of medical HEI of Ukraine, Dnipro Scientific Society of Oncothoracic Surgeons and oncologists of the Allan Blair Cancer Center (Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada).


Advisory and Diagnostic Activities

Since April 2020, diagnostic and advisory work is performed in the Departments and clinic of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Clinical Hospital, University Clinic, Oncolife Medical Center and other medical institutions of the city and oblast.

Employees of the Department have introduced into clinical practice methods of combined, expanded and radical surgical interventions for malignant neoplasms of the esophagus, lungs, mediastinum, chest wall, breast tumors and female genital area. The Department has introduced thoracoscopic and bronchoplastic operations for lung cancer, laparoscopic surgical interventions in oncogynecology. In December 2019, Professor Oleksii Kolesnik performed a video-assisted lobectomy for the first time in Zaporizhzhia. Employees of the Department have been conducting teleconsultations since 2006.

Employees of the Department conduct active sanitary and educational work. Every year they take part in radio and television programs, publish in the periodical press educational articles on cancer.

Booklets have been published for patients on the prevention and early diagnosis of cancer of lung, breast, bladder, female genital, etc.
