Historical Reference

Due to the educational process requirements and in coordination with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, in October 1994 by order of the Rector of Zaporozhye Medical Institute the Department of Hospital Therapy No. 1 was established on the basis of the Medical Unit of Radioprylad State Enterprise. For a short period of time, the Department carried out numerous measures for the organization of educational, methodological, research and treatment work. In particular, the Department organized and technically equipped classrooms, wards for thematic patients, a computer class, functional diagnostic rooms, and a biochemical laboratory. The educational process at the Department began in 1994 and was conducted in accordance with the curriculum in the fifth year of the Medical Faculty, and later in the sixth year of the Medical Faculty. A Functional Diagnostics Course was created on the clinical basis of the Department to acquaint fifth-year students with modern standards of diagnostics of internal organs diseases. Due to the educational process reaquirements, in 2004 the Department of Hospital Therapy No. 1 was reorganized into the Department of Internal Medicine No. 2.

Since October 2016 the Department is headed by Associate Professor Oleksandt Demidenko.

Today, the Department of Internal Medicine No. 2 is the basic therapeutic and cardiological department of ZSMU for the training of medical and pediatric doctors and is a modern medical and diagnostic base. The Department includes: 12 classrooms for practical classes, a computer classroom equipped with 14 computers, a conference room, a scientific laboratory, 4 rooms for functional diagnostics. The team consists of experienced lecturers, who have the academic titles of candidates and doctors of sciences and higher medical categories. Training in therapy and cardiology is carried out during internship training, postgraduate studies and clinical residency.

For proper organization of the educational process, the Department uses Therapeutic, Cardiology and Functinal Diagnostic units of the City Hospital No. 7, where patients are directly supervised. In addition to these units, there are Neurological, Gynecological, ENT and day hospital units.

Educational Disciplines

  • Domestic and foreign fifth-year students of the Medical Faculties Nos. 1 and 2, majoring in "General Medicine" and "Pediatrics", study Internal Medicine.
  • Domestic and foreign fifth-year students of the Medical Faculties Nos. 1 and 2, majoring in "General Medicine" and "Pediatrics", study Functional Diagnostics (elective course).
  • Interns and postgraduate students study Internal Medicine.


Educational and Methodical Work

According to the curriculum as per the Credit Transfer System, work programs were created in all disciplines. Original lectures for domestic and foreign students are taught using multimedia support. The Department hs developed multimedia training programs on Echocardiography, Holter Monitoring, Endoscopy, online courses on Functional Diagnostics for independent work of students. The staff of the Department created methodical recommendations for practical classes in all disciplines for lecturers, domestic and foreign students of the Medical Faculties Nos. 1 and 2.

The training of students at the Department is based on the principles of credit transfer organization of the educational process with elements of independent work, as well as on the introduction of new effective forms of knowledge and skills control. A bank of test tasks has been created for the current and final testing, which includes more than 3,000 tests.


Scientific Directions and Achievements

The main topic of scientific activity of the Department is devoted to the study of factors of origin, mechanisms of formation and course of pathological conditions of the cardiovascular system, in particular the problems of heart failure and arterial hypertension.

The staff of the Department published more than 850 scientific works, 18 monographs, 21 patents of Ukraine for inventions based on the materials completed and performed researches.

All employees of the Department have scientific degrees.

The Department has been an accredited clinical base of the State Expert Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine for many years.


Advisory and Diagnostic Activities

Teachers of the Department constantly perform medical work, as well as participate in advisory work in the units of the City Hospital No. 7 and in other health care facilities of the city.

The Department is equipped with a new Functional Diagnostics Office and a laboratory of the Department, which are used for scientific research of the Department, in the educational process and in joint work with the medical institution.
