Historical Reference
The Department was founded in 1969 as a course of Pediatric Surgery at the Department of Hospital Surgery.
In 1985 the course was reorganized into the Department of Pediatric Surgery. At that time, there was created the School of Pediatric Surgeons, Urologists, Orthopedic Traumatologists and Anesthesiologists, which has become the leading scientific school in Ukraine.
During the years of existence of the Department its workers reveived 15 patents and 10 copyright certificates in various areas of pediatric surgery, defended 3 doctoral and 11 candidate dissertations in pediatric urology, pediatric traumatology, neonatal surgery, and published 189 scientific works on pediatric surgery and pediatric anesthesiology.
Since 2014, the Department is headed by Professor Oleh Spakhi.
Educational Disciplines
Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric Oncology, Pediatric Anesthesiology and Resuscitation (Master's studies, clinical residency, full-time and part-time postgraduate studies).
Educational and Methodical Work
Fifth- and sixth-year students of Medical Faculties majoring in "General Medicine" and "Pediatrics" study Surgery, Pediatric Anesthesiology and Pediatric Resuscitation at the Department. Sixth-year students study Pediatric Oncology.
The training of students at the Department is based on the principles of providing methodological and informational organization of the educational process with elements of independent work, as well as on the introduction of new effective forms of knowledge and skills control. A bank of test tasks has been created for the KROK-3 licensing exams, which has more than 2,800 tests.
According to the curriculum and Bologna Declaration, working programs on the discipline have been created. Original lectures are given exclusively with the use of multimedia technologies.
The staff of the Department has published 3 manuals, received 1 patent for an invention, published more than 40 articles on methodological and scientific work.
Scientific Directions and Achievements
According to the results of research, the number of both urgent and planned surgical interventions has decreased, as well as the percentage of postoperative complications, which has significantly improved the health of children in the Zaporizhzhia oblast.
Cooperation with Other Institutions
The Department maintains close scientific relations with the departments of Pediatric Surgery of Shupyk National Medical Academy of Postgraduate (Kyiv), Kharkiv National Medical University (Kharkiv), Dnipropetrovsk Medical Academy (Dnipro), Wroclaw Medical University (Poland), Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University (Lviv), Tallinn Health Care College (Estonia), Yerevan State Medical University (Armenia), University of Madrid (Spain), University of Naples Federico II (Italy), Belgrade pediatric surgeons (Serbia).
Advisory and Diagnostic Activities
Diagnosis and treatment of patients is carried out on the basis of two medical institutions: Zaporizhzhia Regional Clinical Children's Hospital and City Multipurpose Clinical Children's Hospital No. 5 in General Surgery, Urology, Neonatal Surgery and Intensive Care units. Every month the staff of the Department performs diagnostic and treatment work in the Central Regional Hospital of Zaporizhzhia in accordance with the established schedule.
The Department was one of the first in Ukraine to introduce laparoscopic surgery of children with various acute and planned surgical pathologies into the practice of pediatric surgery.
The staff of the Department is on duty around the clock as surgeons in the clinics of Zaporizhzhia.
