Historical Reference

The Department of General Practice — Family Medicine was founded on June 1, 2013 by order of the Rector of the University to optimize the undergraduate training of future family doctors. On September 1, 2018, the Department was renamed the Department of General Practice — Family Medicine and Internal Diseases. Since the establishment of the Department it is headed by Professor Nataliia Mykhailovska.

  • Propaedeutics of Internal Medicine — second-year students of the Medical Faculty No. 3 (specialty "Dentistry"), second-year students of the Medical Faculty No. 2 (specialty "Technologies of Medical Diagnosis and Treatment", specialization "Laboratory Diagnostics").
  • Propaedeutics of Internal Diseases (for Specific Purposes) — third- and fourth-year students of the Medical Faculty No. 3 (specialty "Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy").
  • Endocrinology — fourth-year students of the Medical Faculty No. 3 (specialty "Dentistry").
  • Internal Medicine — third- and fourth-year students of Medical Faculty No. 3 (specialty "Dentistry").
  • Internal Medicine with Evaluation of Research Results — third-year students of the Medical Faculty No. 2 (specialty "Technologies of Medical Diagnosis and Treatment", specialization "Laboratory Diagnostics").
  • Modern Internal Diseases — postgraduate students (PhD) (specialty 222 Medicine, specialization "Internal Diseases").

Educational and Methodical Work

According to the curriculum of the credit-transfer system, working programs were formed, electronic educational and methodical complexes in all disciplines were prepared. The Department published 25 educational and teaching-methodical manuals with the stamp of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine for domestic and foreign English-speaking students, 57 methodical manuals, workshops and collections of test tasks with the stamp of the ZSMU CMC, 8 online courses for independent work of students and 5 elective courses, 15 electronic manuals, recorded 3 videos, 30 video lectures, created a database of test tasks to control the initial, current and final level of students' knowledge, which contains more than 5,000 tests, in addition there were prepared situational tasks and computer presentations for each topic of practical classes.

 

Scientific Directions and Achievements

The main directions of scientific work of the Department:

  • Research of the peculiarities of the course, improvement of diagnostic, therapeutic approaches and prognostic strategies in coronary artery disease associated with diseases of internal organs.
  • Determining the pathogenetic basis of the formation and manifestation of comorbid pathology on the basis of the study of metabolic, pro-inflammatory and neurohumoral disorders.
  • Development of programs for monitoring and modification of risk factors, modern methods of primary and secondary prevention, algorithms for diagnosis and treatment of the most common diseases of the internal organs.

Professor Nataliia Mykhailovska is a scientific secretary of the Specialized Scientific Council of ZSMU, a member of the Specialized Scientific Council of the Dnipropetrovsk Medical Academy of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the Institute of Gastroenterology of the NAMS of Ukraine, a member of the editorial board of the Pathology journal, a full member of the European Academy of Teachers in General Practice/Family Medicine (EURACT), author of more than 400 scientific papers, 12 patents for utility models and 1 declarative patent for inventions, 8 innovations, monographs, 80 textbooks, including those approved by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

Under the guidance of Professor Mikhailovskaya, the Department performs its researches, candidate dissertation, research work on the topic of two candidate and doctoral dissertations. In addition there were defended 3 candidate dissertations, 4 scientific works of masters at the Department.

 

Cooperation with Other Institutions

The Department maintains close ties with the departments of Family Medicine of the Zaporizhzhia Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the Institute of Family Medicine of the Shupyk National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education, the Department of General Practice (Family Medicine) of the Bogomolets National Medical University and Department of Internal Medicine No. 3 of the Ukrainian Medical Dental Academy.

The Department takes an active part in the work of the Ukrainian Association of Family Medicine, the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA), the European Academy of Teachers in General Practice/Family Medicine (EURACT).

 

Advisory and Diagnostic Activities

Therapeutic, diagnostic and consultative work is carried out in the Center for Primary Health Care No. 6 (outpatient clinics of General Practice — Family Medicine Nos. 1-7, day hospital) and City Hospital No, 4 (Cardiological, Therapeutic, Endocrine and Neurological departments), Velykyi Luh Health Center (departments of Neurorehabilitation, Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, Rehabilitation in Interruption of Pregnancy, and Multidisciplinary department) and Motor Sich Clinic LLC (Rehabilitation Department, Neurology Department), in addition, if required in other health care institutions of Zaporizhzhia and the oblast, not related to clinical bases of the University. Employees of the Department constantly introduce new methods of diagnosis and treatment, carry out sanitary, educational and preventive work among the population of the Zaporizhzhia region.
