Department of Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmacotherapy, Pharmacognosy and Pharmaceutical Chemistry

Head of the Department:
Ivan BILAI, Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Doctor of Philosophy, Academician of the Ukrainian Technological Academy.

Historical Reference

Postgraduate education for the training of pharmacists began in 1994, when the first graduation of interns in the specialty "General Pharmacist" took place. In 1999, on the basis of the Clinical Pharmacology course, training courses for pharmacists were implemented in the regional hospital and the leading departments of the Faculty of Pharmacy. In 2004, the Pharmacy Department of the FPE was founded, headed by Professor Oleksandr Mazulin, Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences. In 2007 it was reorganized into the Department of Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmacotherapy and Pharmacy Management and Economics of the FPE, and since 2009 its name has changed to the Department of Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmacotherapy and Pharmacy Management and Economics.

The founder of the Department is Professor Ivan Bilai. The team, led by an experienced, responsible and professional lecturer and organizer of the educational process, who headed the Clinical Pharmacy course in the Regional Clinical Hospital, focused its efforts on optimizing the training of pharmacists and participants of pre-certification courses for qualification improvement, thematic improvement and specialization. At the Department they study "Clinical Pharmacy", "Pharmacy Management and Economics", "Elements of Practical Psychology", "Computer Science". Since March 2009, distance learning has been practiced in postgraduate education courses and in the full-time internship of pharmacists. Thematic improvements courses in cosmetology for pharmacists-cosmetologists are carried out.

The main scientific activity of the Department was the study of pharmacological activity of synthetic substances and herbal medicines, as well as marketing research of the pharmaceutical market of Ukraine. Since the existence of the Department, there were about 150 graduates of advanced training courses (pre-certification courses and thematic improvement courses). To conduct courses, the employees visited different the regions — Dnipro, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Kherson, Cherkasy, Odessa, etc. Almost 22,000 specialists in the pharmaceutical profession acquired new knowledge and received recommendations for further qualification in the specialties of "General Pharmacy", "Pharmacy Organization and Management" and "Analytical and Control Pharmacy". In addition, more than 8,000 pharmacists-interns obtained the right to receive a certificate of primary specialization "General Pharmacy", studying at the Department disciplines: "Clinical Pharmacy", "Pharmacy Management and Economics", "Elements of Practical Psychology" and "Special Training". Also, about 50 pharmacists received a Master's degree in pharmacy.

From April 1, 2020, the Department of Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmacotherapy and Pharmacy Management and Economics was reorganized. The discipline "Pharmacy Management and Economics" was transferred to another pharmaceutical department of the FPO, and the new department was involved in the disciplines of pharmacognosy and pharmaceutical chemistry. Thus, the Department was renamed the "Department of Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmacotherapy, Pharmacognosy and Pharmaceutical Chemistry" and began operating on September 1, 2020. During the activity of the Department 2 doctoral and 10 candidate dissertations were defended. Professor Ivan Bilai is an example of consistency in scientific research for colleagues, he has developed a new scientific direction in clinical pharmacology of antiatherosclerotic drugs of natural origin and their synthetic analogues, created and implemented in medical practice such hypolipidemic drugs as Betafit and Stygmafit. He also formed principles and approaches in phytotherapy of atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease, organized screening of new derivatives of xanthines and triazoles of different types of activity. The scientist is working on a topic related to the development of optimal conditions for hypoxic conditions (dosed and extreme physical activity, atherosclerosis, hepatitis, diabetes, myocardial infarction, hypertension, stress and pathological obesity), on the basis of which the search for new antioxidant, metabolitotropic, antiatherosclerotic, hypoglycemic, hepatoprotective drugs, and pharmacological principles of metabolic correction of ischemic conditions are being developed.

Postgraduate studies (full-time, part-time, evening classes) are open for the training of scientific personnel in pharmacy.

The Department develops and keeps pace with the times. On-line courses with video content were created and implemented for independent work on "Clinical Pharmacy", "Pharmacognosy", "Pharmaceutical Analysis", "Special Training" and "Elements of Practical Psychology" of pharmacists-interns and the whole contingent of participants of advanced training courses, receving educational services at the postgraduate stage of study in all disciplines of the Department.

During lectures, seminars and practical classes, distance learning forms are used (Skype, MS Teams, Forms).

25 video lectures were recorded to be demonstrated to pharmacists-interns and participants of advanced training courses for pharmacists in Zaporizhzhia and other regions. Thanks to our team, many employees of the pharmaceutical industry choose Zaporizhzhia State Medical University to improve their professional knowledge, although there are other medical universities. And this is not a coincidence, but the result of systematic work.
