Historical Reference

The Department of Pediatric Diseases of the ZSMU FPE was founded on February 2, 2007 to improve the training of pediatric interns and postgraduate training of doctors. The Department is a clinical and scientific base for training pediatricians. Interns study at the Department by following specialties:

  • Pediatrics;
  • Neonatology;
  • Pediatric Anesthesiology;
  • Pediatric Surgery;
  • Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology;
  • other related specialties.

In addition to internships, the Department has postgraduate studies and clinical residency. Graduates of the Department work as doctors in different cities and districts of Ukraine.

The Department conducts improvement courses for pediatricians in the following areas:

  • Pediatrics (curators Prof. Boiarska, Assistant Herasimchuk);
  • Neonatology (curators Prof. Boiarska, Assoc. Prof. Kotlova);
  • Pediatric Surgery (curator Prof. Dmytriakov);
  • Pediatric Anesthesiology (curator Prof. Kurochkin).

Over the past three years, the Department has created 10 thematic courses in Pediatrics, 5 in Neonatology, 6 in Pediatric Anesthesiology, which are in high demand among doctors.

The Department provides the opportunity to undergo internships and specialization (Pediatrics, Pediatric Anesthesiology and Pediatric Surgery).

  • Clinical Immunology and Medical Genetics for interns of pediatric and related specialties (Family Medicine, Surgery, Anesthesiology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Urology, Psychiatry, etc.).


Educational and Methodical Work

To prepare for licensing testing, a bank of test KROK-3 tasks has been created; it has more than 5,000 tests.

Training of doctors in the specialties "Pediatrics" and "General Practice — Family Medicine" is carried out through thematic improvement courses.

Form of study: full-time, part-time and distance full-time. This allows different doctors to take thematic improvement courses without leaving the workplace.

One of the main features of the Department is the use of modern computer technology. For the last 5 years doctors of Berdiansk, Melitopol, Mykhailivka, Vasylivka, Orikhiv, Enerhodar and other cities have been trained online.

The Department implemented a Moodle distance learning system — a web resource designed for self-study or repetition of theoretical material: Pediatrics course (66 lessons), Pediatric Anesthesiology course (17 lessons), Pediatric Surgery course (27 lessons), Neonatology course (9 lessons) and Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology course (1 lesson). Course materials are constantly updated and supplemented.

Since January 2015, the Center for Video Conferencing and Distance Education (Media Center) has been working at the Department.

Pre-certification courses are organized for doctors specializing in "Neonatology", "Pediatric Surgery", "Pediatric Anesthesiology" and ambulance doctors.

In cooperation with the Department of Medical Informatics of ZSMU distance courses and training webinars are held.

In recent years, the staff of the Department has created methodological and training manuals on current topics, including 3 with the stamp of the Ministry of Health, methodological manuals for managers of part-time internship bases:

Developed and implemented in the continuous practical development of doctors Simulation training to master practical skills in the basics of functional diagnostics in pediatric cardiology "PRO-heart", which is conducted in a simulation university center.


Scientific Directions and Achievements

  • Clinical and functional characteristics and principles of supervision of children born with low, very low and extremely low body weight.
  • Formation of autonomic regulation of the cardiovascular system of children born with very low body weight.
  • Prediction and correction of health disorders in young children born by women with various types of psycho-emotional disorders.
  • Treatment and rehabilitation of young children with recurrent acute diseases of the respiratory tract.
  • Clinical and functional characteristics and principles of supervision of children with gastroenterological pathology.
  • Assessment of children's health in schools. Early detection and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and hypertension.
  • Optimization of perioperative preparation, anesthesiological support and postoperative supervision of young children with severe surgical pathology.
  • Manual "Megaureter in Children" was created on the basis of the course of Pediatric Surgery — "Optimization of Diagnosis and Treatment of Megaureter in Children".
  • Indications are substantiated and the technique of endoscopic stenting of the dilated ureter in megaureter as an alternative to surgery is developed.


Cooperation with Other Institutions

The Department maintains close scientific ties with research institutes and higher medical educational institutions of Kyiv, Kharkiv and other cities of Ukraine. The Department cooperates with the Department of Health in organizing regional scientific and practical conferences for pediatricians and family physicians.


Advisory and Diagnostic Activities

Advisory and diagnostic activities are carried out in the departments of City Children's Hospital No. 5, Zaporizhzhia Regional Clinical Children's Hospital, Regional Perinatal Center, ZSMU University Clinic.

Follow-up observation of newborns born with low and very low body weight was organized.

The Department has created a social project for children, parents, expectant mothers, pediatricians, family doctors and specialists — a Steps to Health online resource (in Ukrainian only). It is an educational platform for medical workers and parents to fight for children's health. Separate sections of the site are devoted to future parents, cover the planning and course of pregnancy. There are also separate sections for children's health at different ages.

There are various forms of interactive communication with the target audience: QA format, online communication from the Media Center of the Department of Pediatric Diseases of ZSMU, located on the territory of the City Children's Multidisciplinary Hospital No. 5. The topics of communication are not limited: the issues of care for children of different ages, nutrition, vaccination, psychophysical development and much more. That is, all the steps that lead to the formation of a child's health. Leading scientists of Zaporizhzhia State Medical University — neonatologists, allergists, pediatric gastroenterologists, cardiorheumatologists, endocrinologists, surgeons, infectious disease specialists, ENT doctors, psychoneurologists — will be invited to communicate with parents.

In addition, the site has a section for the professional development of pediatricians and family physicians. With the help of webinars, online lectures, clinical examinations of patients with complex and difficult-to-diagnose pathology, video materials on research methods and surgical interventions, enthusiasts from Zaporizhzhia Medical University hope to increase the professional level of medical workers in children's health and provide distance continuing professional education.

Since 2017, the Department began to use lung ultrasound in children with various pathological conditions (pneumonia, pneumothorax, BPD, etc.). Associate Professor Olena Podlianova is engaged in this area of ​​work, sharing her experience with interns and doctors, participating in thematic improvement courses.

Employees of the Department actively participated as speakers in online forums and conferences.
