Historical Reference

The Department of Urology of Zaporizhzhia State Medical University dates back to the seventies of the last century. At that time the Urology Course was taught as a part of the Faculty Surgery program to fourth-year students of the Medical Faculty.

According to the order of the Ministry of Health of the USSR in 1970, urology was allowed to be allocated to an independent course. However, only on September 1, 1976 at the Zaporozhye Medical Institute organized a completely independent Urology Course. From the very beginning to the present day, the course is located on the basis of the Urology Unit of the Emergency Hospital No. 5 in Zaporizhzhia. There were a total of 60 beds for adults and 30 beds for children. In 1977, Pediatric Urology was separated into the Regional Children's Hospital No. 5 in Zaporizhzhia.

A large number of urgent urological patients and long queues for hospitalization of planned urological patients were the reason for the expansion of the Urology Unit to 100 beds in 1980. The scope of work was such that planned and, first of all, urgent urological care was provided to the population of Zaporizhzhia, the oblast and from other regions of Ukraine.

In 1986, by order of the Ministry of Health of the USSR, the Urology Course was reorganized into the Department of Urology of the Zaporozhye Medical Institute.

Graduates of the department work as doctors in the CIS countries, Yemen, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Algeria, Kuwait.

In 2014, the Department was headed by Professor Heorhii Bachurin.
