Historical Reference

The department was organized in 1959 at the newly opened Zaporozhye Pharmaceutical Institute.

From 1961 to 1964 there was a joint Department of Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology. And in September 1965 it was reorganized into the Department of Pharmacology.

Since 2004, the Department is headed by Professor Ihor Bielenichev, the author of more than 688 scientific papers, 9 monographs, 10 textbooks on pharmacology and 257 patents and copyright certificates, co-creator of a number of domestic drugs, such as Thiotriazoline, Thiocetam, Thiodarone, Cardiotril, Cerebrokurin, Carbatril, Indotril, Angiolin, Hypertril.

During the existence of the department 19 doctors and 100 candidates of sciences have been prepared.

Educational and Methodical Work

The training of students at the Department is based on the principles of providing methodological and informational organization of the educational process with elements of independent work, as well as on the introduction of new effective forms of knowledge and skills control. The Department developed a database of 11,500 testers and a computer class for the final knowledge assessment and preparation of students (Medical Faculty) for the KROK-1 licensing exam. The Department has developed and successfully runs 16 online courses (Adverse Drugs Reactions, Nutrition, Independent Work on Pharmacology, Preparation for KROK-1 in Ukrainian, Russian and English, etc.).

According to the curriculum, working programs in all disciplines have been created. Original lectures for students are given exclusively with the use of multimedia technologies. According to the order of the Rector of ZSMU, an auditorium for interactive lectures was created at the Department. In addition, the Department has issued methodical recommendations for practical classes and developed textbooks and manuals for preparation for practical classes and exams at all faculties.

Scientific Directions and Achievements

The main direction of research work of the Department is devoted to the development and creation of new highly effective neuroprotective agents, the action of which is aimed at maintaining the functional activity of mitochondria and reducing energy deficiency, regulating the expression of endogenous neuroprotective factors (HSP70, HIF-1a), normalizing related NO systems / restored thiols, modifying the ratio of factors regulating neuropathy, which in general reduces mortality and reduces neurological and cognitive deficits.

According to the results of research activities, the staff of the Department published more than 895 scientific articles, 19 monographs, received more than 570 patents and inventions. Employees of the Department took an active part in the creation of such domestic drugs as Thiotriazoline, Thiocetam, Carbatril. Currently, the staff of the Department conducts research on such modern drugs as Angiolin and Hypertril.

Since 2020, under the leadership of Professor Ihor Bielenichev, the staff of the Department performs research work on "Pharmacological Modulation of Glutathione-Dependent Regulation and Implementation of Mechanisms of Endogenous Neuroprotection and Neuroplasticity — New Look at Neuroprotection in Cerebral Infaction" (state reg. No. 0120U101644), in accordance with the thematic plan of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine on the creation of scientific and technical products in the priority scientific area "Fundamental Research in Preventive and Clinical Medicine".

Employees of the Department together with NVO Farmatron, Arterium, Lekkhim, "Mobil Medical" participate in the development of new innovative cardio-, neuro-, endotheloprotective drugs.
