Historical Reference

The Department was founded in 1966.

Since September 2004, it is headed by Professor Svitlana Nedielska.

Since 2011, the clinical base of the Department is included in the international register for the diagnosis and treatment of hereditary angioedema.

During the period of activity of the Department 42 dissertations on the problems of allergic diseases in children were performed, including 5 doctoral dissertations.

Educational Disciplines

Fourth- and sixth-year students of Medical Faculties majoring in "General Medicine" and "Pediatrics" study Pediatric Diseases and Pediatrics.

 

Educational and Methodical Work

The training of students at the Department is based on the principles of providing methodological and informational organization of the educational process with elements of independent work, as well as on the introduction of new effective forms of knowledge and skills control.

In order to improve the preparation of sixth-year students for the KROK-2 licensed exams, a database of tests on topics from the Testing Center database (4,600 tests) was created.

Original lectures, practical classes for students are conducted using the latest multimedia technologies (educational films and atlases, test questionnaires, abstracts, etc.). In order to improve the practical skills of students, visual aids (models and mannequins) and films are used at the Department.

Classes for English-speaking students are conducted by assistants, fluent in English, which is confirmed by coresponding certificates.

Over the last 5 years, 10 textbooks approved by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine have been published.

 

Scientific Directions and Achievements

The Department studies problems of early diagnosis, formation, features of clinic, risk factors of allergic diseases at children of different age groups in the conditions of the industrial city with search of effective programs of treatment and prevention of the specified diseases.

Currently the Deparment works on the prevention and treatment of major functional disorders, somatic pathology in children of different ages. The effectiveness of allergen-specific immunotherapy is studied.

The Department has modern equipment: ESAOTE ultrasound machine (Italy), Cardiolab cardiograph, Spirocom spirograph (Kharkov), a portable skin moisture meter (for the diagnosis of transepidermal water loss by the skin in food allergies and atopic dermatitis). With the help of the portable Gastrolyzer, a respiratory hydrogen test is performed, which allows to diagnose saccharide deficiency, pseudoallergy and true allergy, syndrome of excessive bacterial growth, exocrine insufficiency of the pancreas, malabsorption syndrome.

For the last 3 years the staff of the Department has received 12 patents of Ukraine, 10 information letters have been introduced.

In May 2015, the department organized and held a Scientific and Practical Conference "CurrentIissues of Modern Allergology". The Department traditionally holds the All-Ukrainian scientific-practical conference "Topical Issues of Allergological Science and Practice" (2009, 2011, 2013, 2015).

Employees of the Department are constantly improving their professional level at international congresses. For the last 3 years the number of speeches at Ukrainian congresses and conferences exceeds 120.

Employees of the Department systematically conduct training for general practitioners on problematic issues of pediatric pathology.

 

Cooperation with Other Institutions

For the first time in Ukraine, the staff of the Department organized aeropalinological monitoring of the environment of the region, created a center for the prevention and treatment of allergies of plant origin with the provision of round-the-clock emergency care for children. For four years, the Department has been conducting year-round monitoring of pollen and fungal spores in the air of Zaporizhzhia, conducted 2 Trans-Ukrainian palynological expeditions, with their data being included in the European aeropalinological network. Epidemiological studies are being conducted.

The Department conducts joint scientific work with scientists of the Institute of Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

 

Advisory and Diagnostic Activities

Diagnostic and consultative work is carried out on the basis of the City Multipurpose Clinical Children's Hospital No. 5, University Clinic, as well as during trips to the regions of specialists of the Department, during scheduled examinations. Since 2015, an Allergy Center has been operating on the basis of the Department of Faculty Pediatrics, where the staff of the Department provides consulting assistance. Since 2017, the Department holds monthly pediatric conferences on topical issues of children's diseases on the basis of the City Multipurpose Clinical Children's Hospital No. 5.
