Department of Therapeutic, Orthopedic and Pediatric Dentistry

Head of the Department:
Oleksandr VOZNYI, Associate Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences. In 1987, he graduated from the Dental Faculty of the Dnipropetrovsk State Medical Institute with a degree in Dentistry. He defended his dissertation on "Comprehensive Assessment of Functional State of Organs and Tissues of Oral Cavity in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus with Defects of Dentition Before and After Orthopedic Treatment" in 2003 at the Omsk State Medical Academy. He defended his doctoral dissertation on "Scientific Justification for Improving Organization of Dental Orthopedic Care for Population" in 2009 at the I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University. In 2011 he passed the nostrification of his doctoral dissertation at the Shupyk National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. He has 111 publications, including 81 scientific and 9 educational-methodical, 4 textbooks with the stamp of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, 20 textbooks approved by the CMC of ZSMU; 5 certificates of official registration of programs for electronic computers, 4 certificates of registration of intellectual product.

 

Historical Reference

Training of dentists at Zaporizhzhia State Medical University began in 2007 along with the foundation of a Dentistry course. In July 2010, the course was reorganized into the Department of Dentistry.

To optimize the educational, pedagogical and research processes, as well as to improve the training of students majoring in "Dentistry" in September 2011 there was a need for structural reorganization into two departments: "General and Special Dentistry" and "Otorhinolaryngology and Propaedeutic Dentistry". In September 2012, the Department of General and Special Dentistry began training dentists, interns and masters. In 2012, the first 29 dentists graduated the department. In October 2013, in order to improve the educational process, the department was reorganized into the Department of Therapeutic, Orthopedic and Pediatric Dentistry and the Department of Propaedeutic and Surgical Dentistry. In 2014, there was the first graduation of dentists-interns and 3 masters at the department. In 2015, the department carried out the first graduation of foreign dentists and 2 clinical residents. Since 2017, the Department conducts professional development and thematic improvement courses, and since 2019 — courses of specialization in therapeutic and orthopedic dentistry. As of 2019, more than 300 domestic and foreign students studied at the Department (65 interns, 6 postgraduate students and 20 cadets).

Educational Disciplines

  • Therapeutic Dentistry — third, fourth and fifth years in specialty "Dentistry";
  • Orthopedic Dentistry — third, fourth and fifth years in specialty "Dentistry";
  • Orthodontics — third, fourth and fifth years in specialty "Dentistry";
  • Pediatric Therapeutic Dentistry — fourth and fifth years in specialty "Dentistry";
  • Therapeutic Dentistry, Orthopedic Dentistry, Pediatric Therapeutic Dentistry, Orthodontics — interns and masters.

PCC, TIC and specialization courses for dentists in Therapeutic and Orthopedic Dentistry are conducted.

Third-year students in the sixth semester take the "KROK-1. Dentistry" MLE. Fifth-year students in the tenth semester take the "KROK-2. Dentistry" MLE. Interns in the second year of study take the "KROK-3.Dentistry" MLE. Fifth-year students take the state exam in Therapeutic, Pediatric, Surgical, Orthopedic Dentistry after the tenth semester. After graduation, interns and masters pass the state certification and take a test exam according to the ELEX program.

 

Educational and Methodical Work

All teaching materials meet the requirements of curricula in the disciplines taught at the Department.

Methodical recommendations for students and methodical instructions for lecturers on conducting practical classes are developed. A total of 750 guidelines and recommendations for practical training were prepared.

Lectures with multimedia presentations on Therapeutic, Orthopedic, Pediatric Therapeutic Dentistry and orthodontics have been developed. Lectures with multimedia presentations from the elective course for fourth and fifth years of study have been developed. The Department also developed lectures with multimedia presentations for interns.

Practical classes of third-to-fifth-year students and interns are conducted on clinical bases, equipped with modern equipment and materials, which allows to master modern methods of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of dental diseases.

  • Algorithm for Treatment and Prevention of Caries and Its Complications;

  • Clinical and Laboratory Stages of Manufacturing Stamped-Brazed Bridges;
  • Main Stages of Development of Temporary and Permanent Teeth;

The Department actively participates in the organization and holding of All-Ukrainian, regional scientific and practical conferences, practical conferences and master classes.

 

Scientific Directions and Achievements

Department scientific topic: "Comprehensive Prevention and Treatment of Major Dental Diseases in Residents of Industrial Region". 1 doctoral dissertation is planned and performed. Multiple candidate dissertations are in progress.

The Department maintains close scientific ties with research institutes of Kyiv, Poltava, Lviv, Odessa, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Uzhhorod, Mexico City, Prague.

 

Advisory and Diagnostic Activities

Employees of the Department conduct medical and consultative reception on the bases (listed below).

Lecturers of the Department introduce into practice new methods of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of dental diseases. Highly qualified dental care is provided at the bases. Teachers of the Department take an active part in the work of the Association of Dentists, the Association of Implantologists, the Association of Periodontists of the Zaporozhye region, make reports, poster reports. At all clinical bases of the department interviews are held with patients on the prevention of dental diseases and a healthy lifestyle.
