Historical Reference

In 1986, the first in the USSR Clinical Pharmacology course was organized at the Department of Pharmacology of the Zaporozhye Medical Institute. During five years, the experience of teaching the subject was accumulated, the educational and methodological base was improved and public opinion was formed about the expediency of teaching such a subject in medical universities. After the preparatory period in 1991, the course obrained the status of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology, which became a significant event in medical education in independent Ukraine, and the Zaporozhye Medical Institute became the founder of this educational event. At the Department of Clinical Pharmacology, in collaboration with cardiologists, priority research was conducted to improve the effectiveness of treatment of coronary artery disease through the use of metabolic correction in combination pharmacotherapy of persons of different ages.

During the existence of the course and the Department, the staff defended 12 candidate and 3 doctoral dissertations. The Department has developed a new direction in geriatric cardiology. For the first time, a number of original substrate-coenzyme complexes that affect metabolism have been proposed, and their high efficiency in combination therapy of coronary artery disease in the elderly and senile has been shown. For the first time, the Department conducted clinical testing of new cardioprotective metabolic drugs — carnitine chloride, thiotriazoline and picamilon.

The Department is a unique clinical-pharmacological and scientific base for training medical, pediatric and dental doctors, as well as pharmacists in specialties "Pharmacy" and "Technology of Perfume-Cosmetic Preparations".

Graduates of the Department work as clinical pharmacists in Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Morocco, Egypt, Tanzania.

Educational and Methodical Work

Training is conducted in Ukrainian, Russian and English.

Preparation of students at the Department includes all types of education: lectures, practical and seminar classes, as well as independent work of students.

According to the curricula, work programs in all disciplines have been developed. Original lectures are given using multimedia technologies. Lecture presentations are uploaded to the electronic library.

Educational and methodical materials for teaching students in English are being developed. A textbook and a workshop for foreign fifth-year students in clinical pharmacology with the stamp of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine have been published.

Employees of the Department are co-authors of many educational and methodical publications. In particular, with the stamps of the Ministry of Education and Science and the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

The training of students at the Department is based on the principles of providing methodical and informational organization of the educational process with elements of independent work, as well as on the introduction of new effective forms of knowledge and skills control. A bank of test tasks in the amount of more than 3,000 tests, has been created for the KROK-2 licensed testing.

The Department published methodical recommendations for practical classes in all disciplines for domestic and foreign students of Medical and Pharmaceutical Faculties, as well as textbooks for practical classes in Clinical Pharmacology for English-speaking students of the International Faculty are issued.

In 2016-2020 the Department has developed elective online courses on the following topics: "Use of Drug — Pharmaceutical Care", "Clinical Pharmacology", "Phytotherapy", "Dietology", "Basics of Gerontology and Geriatrics", "Homeopathy", as well as online courses for independent works of students in the following disciplines: Pharmacotherapy, Clinical Pharmacy, Clinical Cosmetology, Clinical Pharmacology; in addition "Clinical Pharmacology" and "Basics of Gerontology and Geriatrics" for English-speaking students.

In 2020, the transition to a distance learning has created new challenges in pedagogical work for the staff of the Department.

During the forced quarantine, the staff of the Department established proper cooperation with students. According to the online schedule, lectures and practical classes in Clinical Pharmacology for students of Medical Faculties Nos. 1, 2, 3 and International Faculty No. 2, as well as Clinical Pharmacy for students of Pharmaceutical Faculties Nos. 1, 2 and International Faculty No. 2 are held in full.

One of the aspects of training future pharmacists is the need to form students' clinical thinking, as well as social and professional mobility. The student must not only comprehend and assimilate information, but also understand the ways of its practical application and decision-making. Under such conditions, due to the remote form of the educational process, the pedagogical load on the teachers of the Department significantly increases.

In addition, the Department is supposed to provide a fundamental preparation to the KROK-2 licensed examination and USQE for fifth-year students of Pharmaceutical Faculties. In addition to the usual testing using the edX platform and MS Teams during classes in real time, each student simulates possible practical situations for providing pharmaceutical care in a pharmacy, which form the necessary skills of the future specialist.

It should be noted that despite the distance learning, the level of knowledge of students has increased.

Results of the "KROK-2. Pharmacy" license exam, received on 11/06/2020, showed that the Department took the first place among the graduating departments of the Pharmaceutical Faculty, the average score is 91.9%.

At the Department on the basis of Zaporizhzhia Regional Clinical Hospital, the work of the computer class for 15 work seats for students of Medical and Pharmaceutical Faculties has been improved.

The Department continues the introduction of new methods of diagnosis and treatment (4 in total as of 2019-2020 academic year) in the clinic based on the materials of the department's researches and materials of candidate and doctoral dissertations. In addition functional research methods are introduced into practice. Monthly scientific and practical conferences are held with participation of doctors of departments and students, which are devoted to topical issues of Internal Medicine, Clinical Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy, Prevention of Drugs Adverse Effects.

Scientific Directions and Achievements

The Department conducted research to improve the effectiveness of treatment of coronary artery disease through the use of metabolic correction in combination therapy of the elderly and senile, as well as the study of oxidative stress, vascular endothelial status and antioxidant system level; the nature of ischemic changes and the daily profile of blood pressure; indicators of cardiohemodynamics and autonomic nervous system in patients with hypertension, coronary artery disease, chronic heart failure, justification of pharmacotherapy of identified disorders.

The results of research are regularly covered in scientific journals, up to 30-35 educational and scientific works are published annually. In particular, during 2013-2020 the staff of the Department published basic textbook "Pharmacotherapy" (edited by Professor Kraidashenko) for students of HMEI with the stamp of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, 10 textbooks with the stamp of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. In addition the Department received 9 patents for inventions and publishes 16-18 textbooks with the stamp of the ZSMU CMC annually. Every year the Department holds All-Ukrainian Scientific and Practical Conferences on Aesthetic Medicine and Cosmetology, included in the register of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. Scientists of the Department take part in the work of foreign, republican congresses and conferences.

Employees of the Department have developed a new direction in geriatric cardiology: for the first time there was suggested a number of original substrate-coenzyme complexes, affecting metabolism, from the groups of energy-forming compounds, amino acids, cofactors, vitamins, and their high efficiency in complex therapy of coronary artery disease in the elderly was shown.

For the first time the principles of rational and differentiated application of means of metabolic correction secondary to the antianginal therapy of coronary artery disease in elderly and senile patients were developed.

The results of researches have been implemented in the activities of a multidisciplinary base hospital of the Regional Clinical Hospital, cardiology and therapeutic departments of city hospitals (Zaporizhzhia), and in the practice of medical institutions of 15 regions of Ukraine.

Cooperation with Other Institutions

The Department maintains relations with the National Pirogov Memorial Medical University (Vinnytsia), I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University, Bogomolets National Medical University, Odessa State Medical University, etc.
