Department of Biological Chemistry

Head of the Department:
Kateryna ALEKSANDROVA, Professor, Doctor of Chemical Sciences.

Historical Reference

The Department was founded in 1960. During the existence of the Department its scientific work was directed to medical enzymology (study of the effect of ionizing radiation on metabolic processes in the body), problems of hemocoagulation, study of parietal digestion and mediator-enzymatic systems of the intestinal mucosa in the surgical treatment of diseases of the digestive tract, development of biochemistry of stress, coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction, synthesis, study of physicochemical and biological properties of xanthine derivatives.

In 2008 the Department was headed by Kateryna Alexandrova. At that time employees of the Department actively participated in the study of biochemical properties of xanthine xenobiotics. The newest research laboratory was created at the Department.

Educational Disciplines

The educational process in the Biological Chemistry is provided for:

  • second-year students of the Medical Faculties Nos. 1, 2 and 3 in the specialties "Medicine", "Pediatrics", "Dentistry" and "Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy";
  • third-year students of the Pharmaceutical Faculties Nos. 1 and 2 in the specialties "Pharmacy" and "Technology of Perfume-Cosmetic Preparations";
  • second-year students of the International Faculty No. 2 in the specialties "Medicine" (English medium of instruction), "Medicine" (Ukrainian and Russian mediums of instruction), "Dentistry" (Ukrainian medium of instruction);
  • third-year students of the International Faculty No. 2 in the specialty "Pharmacy" (Ukrainian and Russian mediums of instruction).

Educational and Methodical Work

The educational and methodical work of the Department is provided by 3 professors, doctors of sciences, 5 associate professors, 3 senior lecturers, candidates of sciences, 4 assistants (2 candidates of sciences and 1 doctor of philosophy) and laboratory staff.

The training of students is based on the principles of providing methodological and informational organization of the educational process with elements of independent work, as well as on the introduction of new effective forms of control of knowledge and skills.

The Department is a base for the discipline "Biological Chemistry" for students of medical and pharmaceutical HEI of III-IV level of accreditation in the specialties "Pharmacy" and "Technology of Perfume-Cosmetic Preparations". Employees of the Department created sample programs in Biological Chemistry, approved by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

In 2014, with the participation of the staff of the Department, a "Biochemistry" national textbook was created for students of pharmaceutical specialties.

According to the curriculum, working programs in all disciplines have been created. Lectures for students are conducted using modern multimedia software. The staff of the Department has created and is constantly updating the bank of KROK-1 tests, which has more than 2,000 tests.

During 2015-2020 academic years the Department has prepared and revised 196 workshops and teaching aids for practical classes, including those for English-speaking students.

The teaching staff of the Department has created online courses and educational and methodological complexes in all disciplines of the Department of Biological Chemistry.

In 2017, the staff of the Department created its own website. The content of the site is in three languages and fully meets the educational needs of students.

Scientific Directions and Achievements

The research topic of the Department is devoted to the synthesis, research of physicochemical and biological properties of xanthine xenobiotics.

Scientists of the Department have developed simple laboratory methods for the synthesis of xanthine derivatives, not described in the literature before. Besides that their physicochemical and biological properties have been studied.

Cooperation with Other Institutions

The Department conducts comprehensive research together with other medical and biological departments of the University, as well as with the Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University, Kharkiv Medicines Research Center, Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the NAMS of Ukraine, Kharkiv National University of Pharmacy, Lviv Control Institute of Veterinary Drugs and Bioadditives, Lviv Polytechnic National University, Ukrainian State University of Chemical Technology, Ukrorgsintez NVP, National Pirogov Memorial Medical University, Vinnytsia, and others.

Employees of the Department underwent internships at medical universities in the EU.

Scientists of the Department are members of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Branch of the Ukrainian Biochemical Society of the NAS of Ukraine.
