Historical Reference

In 1973, a Peparatory Faculty for Foreign Citizens was opened at the Zaporozhye Medical Institute.

In 1995, the Department of Russian Language was merged with a similar department, which provided the educational process at the main faculties. Associate Professor Kateryna Heichenko was appointed as the head of the newly created Department.

In 2007, the Department received a new name   Foreign Citizens Language Training, and in 2011 it became known as the Department of Language Training.

In 2017, the Department allocated an autonomous language training course for foreign students of the pre-university stage of study. Associate Professor Larysa Vasetska was appointed as the Head of the course.

From January 1, 2018, the pre-university course received the status of a separate structural unit within the International Faculty No. 1 and was named the Foreign Citizens Training Center. Associate Professor became the Head of the Center.

Educational Disciplines

For the pre-university stage of study:

  • Ukrainian as Foreign Language ("General Literary Language" and "Scientific Style of Speech" aspects);
  • Local Lore;
  • Russian as Foreign Language.

For the PhD stage of study (22 Health Care):

  • Basics of Pedagogics and Innovative Technologies in Higher Education.

 

Educational and Methodical Work

In accordance with the academic curricula, work programs and different plans for all disciplines have been created.

A new PhD course in the 22 Health Care has been developed: original lectures from the course "Basics of Pedagogics and Innovative Technologies in Higher Education" with multimedia presentations. The Center created a block of video lectures, methodical recommendations for practical classes for lecturers and students, presentations for practical classes, independent and individual work for students and cases of problematic pedagogical situations for pedagogical training.

For high-quality language training of foreign citizens, as well as for monitoring the educational activities of students and determining the level of their language training, lectureres of the Center created a manual, workshops, textbooks, collections of test tasks, collections of texts for reading, guidelines for lecturers and students for practical classes in the disciplines "Ukrainian Language", "Local Lore", "Russian as Foreign Language", prepared sets of tests on the disciplines, studied at the Center. All teaching materials are submitted in paper and electronic versions.

The staff of the Center created more than 100 multimedia presentations for practical classes in the disciplines "Ukrainian Language (Common Literary Speech)", "Ukrainian Language (Scientific Speech)", "Local Lore", videos, interactive tasks.

In the Center, the educational process is organized according to a blended form of education in accordance with modern educational challenges.

The new model of learning dynamically combines two forms of organization of the educational process: distance (online and offline) and classroom. This model is focused on active modernization of education at the pre-university stage of study, improving its quality through digital technologies, meeting the educational needs of our students according to their individual capabilities and competencies, increasing motivation to learn and stimulate development and improvement of knowledge, skills.

The main task of this model is to prepare foreigners for active communication activities in the socio-cultural, domestic and educational-professional spheres of communication.

Distance learning is organized using the MS Teams.

Classes in the remote mode are held not only in the format of a meeting, but also using other MS Office 365 services, namely MS One Note, MS Forms, MS Stream, as well as Flipgrid, Kahoot, Mindomo applications. These electronic resources are used at all stages of the educational process for the implementation of multilevel didactic tasks: for independent work of students, for various types of trainings (grammar, speech, communication), for control, to create comfortable conditions for homework.

To effectively check the level of formation of communicative, language and speech competencies of foreigners, a set of examination materials (including those on the basis of RATOS and Forms resources) was created, and evaluation criteria for them were developed.

To ensure the individual work of foreigners in the computer class and in the interactive technologies class, the Center created lessons in a new format with multimedia presentations and videos.

Considerable attention is paid to the issue of lecturers training. The Center has a School of Pedagogical Skills, in addition master classes are held.

The main directions of methodical work of the Center: providing educational and methodical materials related to "Ukrainian Language", "Local Lore", "Russian as Foreign Language" courses and creating educational and methodical materials in new educational formats: lessons with multimedia presentations, video lessons, communicative trainings using interactive technologies.

All methodical materials in the corresponding disciplines are located in electronic form on the ftp-page of the Center, on the edX platform, on the cloud services MS Groups and MS Teams.

 

Scientific Directions and Achievements

The topic of the Center's research is "Communicative Approach to Teaching Scientific Discourse to Foreign Students". The stages of teaching scientific discourse in the process of formation of communicative competence of foreign students at the pre-university stage of study are investigated. Researchers developed the methodical bases of formation of skills and abilities discourse creation and a methodical system of exercises and tasks for formation of discursive competence of foreign students at a preparatory stage of study.

All lecturers regularly publish articles and abstracts in scientific collections and specialized journals of Ukraine and foreign publications, participate in international and national scientific and practical conferences and forums. Associate Professors Larysa Vasetska and Olha Soloviova take an active part in the author's teams to create monographs on humanitarian and educational issues.

 

Pedagogic and Organizational Activities

The lecturers of the Center conduct active educational work among foreign citizens, aimed at their acquaintance with our country and culture, the development of moral qualities and mutual respect for representatives of other nationalities.

The Center annually organizes and holds:

  • Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language (November);
  • Drawing contest "Ukraine Through Foreigh Students' Eyes" (November);
  • New Year's concert "Let's Get Acquainted!" (December);
  • Drawings Exhibition (February);
  • Ukrainian Language Olympiad (April);
  • Poetry Readers Competition (April-May);
  • joint excursion to the Khortytsia Island, visit to the historical museum and Cossack theater (May).

Curators of groups arrange excursions to the campus of ZSMU, different places of Zaporizhzhia and neighboring cities, trips to the circus, theaters and cinemas, etc.

 

Cooperation with Other Institutions

The Foreign Citizens Training Center works closely with V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, as well as with other Ukrainian HEI and international organizations — the Moroccan Culture Center at ZSMU.
