Historical Reference

In 1973, a Preparatory Faculty for foreign citizens was opened at the Zaporozhye Medical Institute, one of the first in Ukraine, and a Department of the Russian Language was established. The Department was headed by Senior Lecturer Lidiia Hladun.

In 1975, the second Department of the Russian Language was organized for first-to-fifth-year students of the main faculties under the leadership of Associate Professor Kateryna Heichenko. In 1995, these departments were merged into one. Since 2007, it has been called the Department of Language Training of foreign citizens.

The Ukrainian language is taught at the I-III courses of the International Faculties Nos. 1 and 2, as well as:

  • Practical Course of Ukrainian as Foreign Language (for foreign first-to-third-year students);
  • Local Lore;
  • Methods of Teaching Language as Foreign (special course for third-to-sixth-year students);
  • special course in preparation for the candidacy exam;
  • online courses in various fields.

The Department of Language Training was the largest among the departments of the University. In January 2017, teachers who worked in pre-university groups separated from the Department and moved to the Foreign Citizens Training Center. Currently, the Department has 3 associate professors, 6 senior lecturers, 15 lecturers.

For 43 years of work of the Department more than 20 thousand foreign citizens from 101 countries of the world have undergone language training.

Lecturers of the Department worked abroad (Algeria, England, Afghanistan, Italy, Kampuchea, North Korea, Laos, Mali, Mozambique, Mongolia, Germany, New Zealand, Syria, the Czech Republic and other countries), where they taught the languages to students, postgraduate students and interns.

Educational and Methodical Work

The main task of the Department is the high quality of language training of foreign students to obtain professional knowledge. The staff of the Department is constantly improving the educational and methodological base.

14 new academic programs in the discipline of medical, dental and pharmaceutical faculties have been compiled. Credit work plans have been developed on their basis. Methodical materials are prepared for each lesson. The author's teams of the Department published 4 manuals, 2 of which are stamped by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, more than 70 textbooks, 18 methodical recommendations and dictionaries, 19 online courses for independent work and study of culturological aspects of language (Functions and Speech Intentions of Literary Text; Compression Transmission of Information of Literary Text Using Intentional Programs; Intentional Programs of Literary Texts; Features of Literary Discourse. Formation of Emotional Evaluation of Work; Professional Communication: Doctor — Patient; Functional Features of Communication; Introduction to Profession: Scientific Speech; Modeling of Professional Dialogue; Communicative Functions of Text; Professionally-Oriented Discourse, etc.).

 

Scientific Directions and Achievements

During the whole period of the Department's work, 16 teachers defended their dissertations and now work in Ukraine, the USA, Switzerland and other countries.

The Department is developing a scientific topic "Communicative Approach to Teaching Scientific Discourse to Foreign Students". Within this topic 4 teachers perform dissertation research. The result of such work is scientific articles and theses published in scientific collections and journals. The total number of publications of lecturers of the Department is over 1,000. Foreign students also take the first steps in science, they annually make reports at student scientific conferences, take an active part in departmental competitions.

 

Pedagogic and Organizational Activities

Language training of foreign students is based on finding ways to reveal the abilities of each of them. This is facilitated not only by the educational process, but also by a leisure organization. Under the guidance of lecturers of the Department students learn a lot about the history and culture of the Ukrainian people, and about Zaporizhzhia itself. This is facilitated by the traditional visits to museums, the Khortytsia Island, exhibitions, schools and other educational institutions of the city, as well as trips to the cities and significant places of Ukraine (Dnipro, Kyiv, Kaniv, the Carpathians), visits to theaters, circuses, concerts, meetings with interesting people, veteran soldiers. Foreign students take part in departmental and University competitions, reviews, quizzes, events, festivals, sports events.

All the work of the Department is based on the creative interaction of lecturers and foreign students.

 

Cooperation with Other Institutions

The staff of the Department is a member of the Ukrainian Association of Teachers of Ukrainian Language and Literature, cooperates with Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University, Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University, Vitebsk State Medical Institute, Belarusian State University and others.
