Students of Zaporizhzhia State Medical University have many opportunities for personal and professional growth. One of the international internship programs open for Ukrainian medical students and faculty staff is Mitacs Globalink, that offers internships at Canada's most popular medical research centers.
During the 2018-2019 academic year, at that time a 4th-year student, Olga Svyntozelska gained a grant for an internship in Canada in the frames of this program. Within 12 weeks, the intern gets the opportunity to work on an interesting scientific project with leading scientists of the world under the guidance of an experienced professor. Thanks to the Government of Canada and the Ukrainian Diaspora in Canada, the internship program is fully funded.
Here's what Olga tells about it:
"After a complex selection process in November-December of the previous year, which included a detailed check of questionnaires, assessment of the applicant’s basic knowledge in medicine, that was perfect due to knowledge received at ZSMU, and personal interview, I was selected and directed to the group of Professor Annie LeBlanc from the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Family and Emergency Medicine, Laval University (Quebec), one of Canada's top 3 universities for researches in the medical field. In addition, the professor herself has research experience not only with Laval University but also with Mayo Clinic - a recognized scientific and clinical world leader in the field of medicine.
I really enjoyed working under the supervision of Professor Annie LeBlanc. The work in the laboratory was organsed in such a way that everyone had several projects and independently organized the work. The absence of deadlines was an additional plus and did not affect the performance of the office at all. Moreover, we had chance to take part in various scientific and practical trainings, as well as Mitacs Step workshops to develop a variety of additional skills. Everyone was also invited to attend any conference or other training event reimbursed by Mitacs for free. I took this opportunity, and took part in the 3-day 10th International Shared Decision Making Conference. The best feature of the conference was the opportunity to communicate with many scientists from different countries about the successful implementation of evidence-based medicine in their countries.
Another special feature of the program is the availability of a mentor who helps with household issues and the ability to contact the Ukrainian Diaspora in Canada, which also provides a great help in case of illness or problems with accommodation during the first week of internship.
In general, I have to say that you never know exactly what opportunities may be waiting for you in a minute. Don’t wait, take your chance!"
The Administration of ZSMU wishes Olena success and inspiration in her research and study, and we invite everyone to follow the link to know more about the program.
