Research Studies Go On

In February — early March of this year, a unique, state of the art Training Medical Laboratory Center (TMLC) with Vivarium was put into operation. ZSMU is rightly proud of such a complex, millions spent on its reconstruction and equipment turned into a powerful breakthrough for university scientists, who received motivation and excellent conditions for fruitful research.

Considering that the quarantine began in the same time and much has changed in the formats of educational and scientific work, one would think that life in the vivarium froze to 'better times'. But, to the credit of the specialists who take care of it, the picture is completely different — the vivarium functions, and quarantine exists only for animals that have just arrived here.

"These days we received a batch of guinea pigs and Wistar rats," says Associate Professor Yevhen Pruhlo, Candidate of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Head of the Department of Experimental Research with Vivarium. "This is a good replenishment of experimental animals, which were immediately placed in cages for quarantine. In total, the vivarium is designed for 700 laboratory animals, all arranged so that those who are already in a scientific experiment, in no way come into contact with the new addition, which must take some time to adapt. We currently have more than 500 rats and a number of other species, the University centrally purchases animals for the departments, according to the plans of scientific work.

I will say at once that ZSMU strictly adheres to the protocols of the European Convention for the Protection of Vertebrate Animals used for Experimental and other Scientific Purposes. The living conditions of the animals are simply exemplary, special cages have been purchased for them, they are cared for around the clock, their appearance and behavior are observed. The premises have standardized temperature, air conditioning, ventilation with parameters control. According to international standards, animals consume certified feed. In two laboratories of functional researches it is possible to carry out pressure measurement, ECG, medical ultrasound on the certified equipment, to investigate other parameters which are necessary for scientists, say, urine, blood, etc., to observe their behavior after experiments and during pathological states, etc. A feature of our complex is an experimental operating room with a preoperative room, as well as a room for keeping carcasses of dead animals, which disposal takes place in accordance with the agreement in the crematorium.

All this gives reason to talk about the integrity of the experiments conducted by researchers. With all postgraduate and doctoral students, we conclude agreements, which spell out all the conditions of research: experiment plan, calendar plan, what technical support will be used, etc. The logs record the registration of animals for each study, their aliment, operations, autopsies, manipulations, etc.

So far, some researchers who began research in February have completed it, and 13 research programs have been completed from February to May. We will enter into agreements with new candidates for a degree, who have applied for laboratory animals studies."

Science is a laborious process, incompatible with haste. And continuous. Therefore, according to Yevhen Pruhlo, some researchers, completing one experiment, continue, on the basis of the obtained data, another. But it is undeniable that the capabilities of the new TMLC with Vivarium have already been appreciated and continue to work on interesting topics by scientists of the departments of Human Anatomy, Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy, Urology, Organic and Bioorganic Chemistry, Pharmacology and Medical Formulation, Physical and Colloidal Chemistry, Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmacotherapy, Pharmacognosy and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Natural Sciences, Histology, Cytology and Embryology, and others. Most scientists perform research in collaboration with the TMLC under the guidance of Professor Andrii Abramov, Doctor of Medical Sciences.

A significant part of scientific research is performed by employees of the Experimental Research Department. Yevhen Pruhlo noted the conscientious work of his colleagues, who are close to him, who perform numerous operations, provide pharmaceutical support for animal research or are in charge for the condition of the animals, their care, and their issuance for examination.

The work continues, and it is important that the TMLC with numerous laboratories, which carry out research at the level of world standards, demonstrates the scientific and intellectual level of ZSMU, and gives hope and motivation to young people, aspiring to immerse themselves to science. And the University will always help.
