Development of Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy

A traditional round table was held with the participation of the Guarantor of the Educational Program, members of the project group in the specialty "Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy", representatives of the departments of practical training and stakeholders.

Its purpose was to outline the problematic issues, ways to approach their solution and prospects for further development of the specialty "Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy".

Associate Professor Svitlana Malakhova, Guarantor of the Educational Program, Deputy Dean of the Medical Faculty No. 3, reported on the current state of training of applicants in the specialty "Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy" at Zaporizhzhia State Medical University in accordance with the Standard of Higher Education. She analyzed aspects of fruitful cooperation of project team members with general practitioners with rehabilitation experience, who are leading associate professors and professors of many departments of ZSMU. The results of joint work are reflected in the Educational Program and scientific articles.

Representatives of the project group — Professor of Physical Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine, Physical Education and Health Eduard Doroshenko and Assistant Aleksander Cherepok — reported on the results of training bachelors majoring in "Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy" based on the results of students of 1-3 years of study.

Inna Lyakhova, Professor of Physical Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine, Physical Education and Health, stressed the importance of phased acquisition of knowledge by students, which is provided by the current academic curriculum, which allows students to acquire knowledge of theoretical disciplines in 1-2 years and then use them in study of practical disciplines.

Maxim Kozhemiak, Associate Professor of the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics, shared his experience of teaching the disciplines "Traumatology and Orthopedics (for specific purposes)" and "Sports Traumatology". He noted, in particular, that last academic year, second-year students with interest took an active part in the work of the student scientific group at the department.

Maryna Sikorska, Associate Professor of the Department of Nervous Diseases, focused on the fact that the study of the discipline "Neurology and Neurosurgery (for specific purposes)" will be held for the first time for fourth-year students, given that the department has conducted thorough preparation, developed academic curricula and syllabus of the discipline, as well as textbooks. Students will have the opportunity to combine theoretical and practical knowledge, as neurological patients require a long recovery process, which will be provided by a multidisciplinary team with the participation of physical therapists and occupational therapists.

Vadym Chugunov, Professor of the Department of Psychiatry, Psychotherapy, General and Medical Psychology, Narcology and Sexology, emphasized the role of occupational therapist. He noted that teaching the discipline "Clinical Psychology" is aimed at acquainting the future physical therapists and occupational therapists with the psychophysiological aspects of the disease, it is also important to teach them to communicate with the patient and family members, which is an important component of successful treatment and recovery.

The conversation turned out to be substantive, constructive, and interesting for all participants of the round table.
